Science Engagement comprises all aspects of public engagement with science, including science communication, science literacy, and science outreach and awareness. Its vital role in society has been more pronounced during the current COVID-19 pandemic. As the need to engage with people in diverse ways increases, so has the identity of the Science Engager. The responsibility of Science Engagement no longer lies solely with academics and universities, but now includes specialists across many disciplines and roles. Science Engagement now includes programming in schools, collaborations with media, museums, and artists. For efficient and sustainable programmes,  targeted funding is necessary. This session aims to explore Science Engagement through a financial lens, to examine how we can make funding more accessible. During the webinar, two experts will share insights on their work in Science Engagement funding.

Creatives For Science

Arts and Science are often regarded as different fields with no interplay between disciplines. However, there exists a rich interaction between the two that needs to be explored. Some of these interactions include scientific communication and how to utilize diverse artistic formats and emerging technologies to promote public science engagement. In the field of science, there is a huge unmet demand in communicating complex ideas effectively to the general public. In addition to  promoting public science engagement that is creative and inclusive.

During this session we will have a panel discussion and presentations. The panel seeks to catalyze conversation  on the avenues that exist for artists and scientists to build synergies so as to promote an inclusive public engagement and; advance science and innovation. The presentations will be by creatives who have worked within science education, communication and engagement;  they will  share their experiences , lessons learnt and  best practices.

A human rights festival

The first edition of Under Our Skin 2021, Kenya will be held in Nairobi from 16- 25 July 2021. The festival aims to entertain, inform and inspire through the medium of film. Motivate audiences and participants to question, debate, and reflect on the state of human rights both in Kenya and internationally.

UTM’s short film Bintimaji and the Ocean has been officially selected to screen during this festival under the theme Social Contract redefined. The film will be screened on 18th July at Unseen ,1:00PM and Mathare Social Justice Centre, 2:00 PM respectively.
